Oxytetracycline hydrochloride is an antibiotic belonging to the group tetracyclines. Oxytetracycline hydrochloride potently inhibits gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Oxytetracycline hydrochloride is a protein synthesis inhibitor that prevents aminoacil-tRNA from binding to complex ribosomal RNA. Oxytetracycline hydrochloride also has anti-HSV-1 activity.
Oxytetracycline hydrochloride is a broad-spectrum antibiotic; its antibacterial spectrum and antibacterial principle are basically the same as tetracycline.

Treatment of bacterial infections in livestock (cattle, sheep, pigs) such as respiratory tract infections (e.g., pasteurellosis), gastrointestinal infections (e.g., colibacillosis, salmonellosis), and genitourinary tract infections.
Management of bacterial diseases in poultry (chickens, ducks) including mycoplasmosis (chronic respiratory disease), pullorum disease, and fowl cholera.
Control of bacterial infections in aquaculture species (fish, shrimp) like Aeromonas hydrophila-induced septicemia and vibriosis.
Note: It is used in compliance with veterinary drug residue standards to avoid excessive use leading to bacterial resistance or residue in animal-derived foods.
Treatment of rickettsial diseases (e.g., Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus).
Infections caused by susceptible bacteria (e.g., brucellosis, cholera) when other antibiotics are not suitable.
Acne vulgaris (topical or oral formulations for moderate inflammatory acne, as an alternative to other tetracyclines).
Agricultural field: Used as a bacteriostatic agent in some crop protection formulations (regulated strictly to prevent environmental resistance).
Laboratory research: Served as a selective agent in microbial culture media to inhibit the growth of susceptible bacteria.
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines, pregnant women, and children under 8 years old (may cause tooth discoloration and bone development abnormalities).
Resistance: Long-term use may lead to the emergence of resistant strains, so it should be used under the guidance of a physician/veterinarian.
Drug interactions: Avoid concurrent use with metal ion-containing preparations (e.g., calcium, magnesium supplements) as they form insoluble complexes and reduce absorption.
