It is a naphthalene-based carboxylic acid with a hydroxyl group at the 3-position and a carboxyl group at the 2-position. It usually appears as a yellow to beige-brown fine crystalline powder, with a melting point of about 218–223 °C. It is practically insoluble in water but soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, chlorobenzene and alkaline solutions.

Main Uses

Dye and pigment intermediate: Mainly used to produce Naphthol AS and other naphthols, such as Naphthol AS-BO, AS-RL, AS-E, AS-D, AS-VL, AS-BS and AS-OL.

Organic pigments: Used in azo pigments and BON red pigments, such as Pigment Red 6B, Lithol Rubine BK-type pigments, and other bright red, bleed-resistant pigments.

Pharmaceutical intermediate: Can be used as a building block in the synthesis of certain medicinal compounds.

Insecticide/agrochemical intermediate: Applied in the synthesis of certain pest-control intermediates.

Coupling component: Acts as a coupling component for diazo compounds; its calcium, barium or manganese salts can form stable colored pigments.
