Benzethonium chloride (CAS 121-54-0, molecular formula C₂₇H₄₂ClNO₂, MW ≈ 448.08) is a synthetic quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) — a cationic surfactant that doubles as an antimicrobial agent. Common trade names include Hyamine 1622 and Phemerol.

Physically, it is an odorless white solid (flakes or powder), extremely soluble in water (forming a foamy solution) and also soluble in ethanol, acetone and chloroform. Its 1% aqueous solution has a pH of about 4.8–5.5, and the solution can withstand heat/autoclave sterilization. It is light- and air-sensitive in concentrated form, so it should be stored sealed, cool and protected from light.

Mechanism of action: the positively charged nitrogen head is attracted to the negatively charged microbial cell wall/membrane. It inserts into the membrane, increases permeability, causes leakage of cellular contents and leads to cell lysis.
