Piroctone olamine is a highly effective, non-toxic and non-irritating anti-dandruff agent that can be widely used in anti-dandruff shampoos and conditioners. Piroctone olamine is used in combination with other substances as a part of shampoo effectively reduced the amount of dandruff and, at the same time, provided hair conditioning advantages. Recently was shown, that piroctone olamine could induce apoptosis and possessed a significant in vivo effect against myeloma.

Uses:
Piroctone olamine (INCI; CAS 68890-66-4, C₁₆H₃₀N₂O₃, MW ≈298.4) is the 1:1 salt of piroctone (1-hydroxy-4-methyl-6-(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)pyridin-2(1H)-one) with ethanolamine. The best-known trade name is Octopirox (Clariant). It appears as a white to pale yellow crystalline powder, m.p. ca. 130–136 °C, sparingly soluble in water (~0.05%), freely soluble in ethanol and surfactant systems, stable over pH 3–9 and heat-stable, but light-sensitive and requiring protection from light.
Mechanism of action: the hydroxypyridinone ring chelates intracellular Fe³⁺ (and other polyvalent metal ions such as Al³⁺) in fungal cells, blocking metal-dependent enzyme systems and mitochondrial energy metabolism — effectively starving the fungus. It also decomposes scalp peroxides and inhibits irritating unsaturated fatty acids released by lipolysis of sebum triglycerides, conferring antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory activity. It is effective against both proliferating and low-metabolic-state fungi.
Uses
Anti-dandruff / anti-itch shampoos and conditioners: targeting dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis and scalp pruritus (Malassezia globosa, M. restricta, etc.).
Leave-on scalp care: scalp serums, hair tonics, leave-in creams — one of the few anti-dandruff actives permitted in leave-on hair products.
Face and body care: seborrhoeic areas (nasal alae, glabella, chest, back folliculitis-like eruptions), oil-control and acne products, shaving foams.
Deodorants and bar soaps: inhibits odour-forming skin flora (e.g. Corynebacterium, Staphylococcus).
Auxiliary preservative / booster: broad-spectrum antimicrobial; boosts preservation systems and allows reduction of conventional preservatives.
Pet care: anti-dandruff, anti-itch shampoos for dogs and cats.
Combination partner: with salicylic acid (keratolytic/desquamating), climbazole (azole synergy), zinc PCA, and fatty acid esters such as PMC/PMU.
