Chemically, it is the amide conjugate of benzoic acid and glycine (an acyl glycine). In living organisms, the liver (in dogs, mainly the kidneys) "detoxifies" benzoic acid into hippuric acid via glycine N-acyltransferase, which is then excreted in urine. It occurs naturally in the urine of horses and other herbivores, as well as in humans (human daily excretion is roughly 0.3–2.5 g)—hence the name "hippuric" (from hippos, horse). The industrial product is essentially synthetic: glycine + benzoyl chloride condensation in alkaline solution, followed by hydrochloric acid acidification and recrystallization.

1. Pharmaceutical intermediate (largest use)
Methenamine hippurate: the active ingredient in the FDA-approved drug Hiprex, used for long-term prevention/suppression of recurrent urinary tract infections. Here hippurate plays two roles—it has mild intrinsic antibacterial activity and helps maintain acidic urine, promoting methenamine hydrolysis to release formaldehyde, which kills bacteria. This is the core downstream driver of hippuric acid demand.
Sodium hippurate: a microbiology culture-medium reagent; Group B streptococci hydrolyze hippurate to produce benzoic acid, a trait used for species identification (e.g., streptococci, campylobacter identification).
Precursor for derivatives: p-aminohippuric acid (PAH, formerly used to measure renal plasma flow) and related acylglycine compounds.

Used in producing fluorescent dyes such as Fluorescent Yellow H8GL and Disperse Fluorescent FFL.
3. Cosmetics / personal care
In the PCPC/CosIng system its function is listed as a hair-conditioning agent. It forms a light, water-soluble film on the hair surface, making hair softer, easier to comb, less frizzy and shinier; commonly used in conditioners, hair masks, smoothing shampoos and leave-in sprays.
