2-Phenoxyethanol (INCI: PHENOXYETHANOL; CAS 122-99-6, C₈H₁₀O₂, MW 138.16, EINECS 204-589-7, FEMA 4620) is a glycol ether / aromatic ether alcohol — the mono-phenyl ether of ethylene glycol, made by base-catalysed addition of phenol to ethylene oxide followed by vacuum distillation. It is a colourless, slightly viscous liquid with a faint floral/aromatic odour, m.p. 11–13 °C, b.p. 245–247 °C, density ~1.10 g/mL, flash point >105 °C, logP ≈1.2, water solubility ~27–30 g/L at 20 °C, freely soluble in ethanol, glycerin and most surfactant systems, essentially insoluble in mineral oil.

Antimicrobial mechanism: it acts as a membrane-active biocide and uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation, competitively inhibiting malate dehydrogenase and increasing K⁺ permeability of the cell membrane. Spectrum is broad against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, with particular potency against Pseudomonas aeruginosa; activity against yeasts/moulds is weaker, so it is almost always used in combination. It is non-formaldehyde-releasing and stable from roughly pH 3–10 and up to ~85 °C processing temperature.
