Ceftaxime sodium is the sodium salt form of cefotaxime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic β-lactam with bactericidal activity. Ceftaxime sodium binds to and inactivates penicillin-binding protein (PBP) on the inner membrane of the bacterial cell wall. The inactivation of PBPs interferes with the crosslinking of peptidoglycan chains necessary for bacterial cell wall strength and rigidity. This causes the bacterial cell wall to weaken, leading to cell lysis. Compared with second- and first-generation cephalosporins, cefotaxime sodium has stronger antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria and weaker antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria.
Cefotaxime sodium is white, off-white or light yellowish white crystal, odorless or slightly special odor. The drug has a wide antibacterial spectrum, strong antibacterial effect, small toxic side effects, stable β-lactamase, extremely high antibacterial activity against hemolytic streptococcus, pneumococcus, influenza bacillus and meningococcus, especially on Enterobacteria, and has a strong inhibitory effect on most anaerobic bacteria: clinically widely used in the treatment of sensitive bacteria caused by sepsis, purulent meningitis and respiratory tract, urinary tract, biliary tract, bone and joints, skin and soft tissue, abdominal cavity, digestive tract, facial features, genitals and other parts of the infection, It can also be used for infectious diseases with low defense functions such as low immune function and decreased antibody cells.
