Sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous is used as an analytical reagent, buffer, water softener and fire retardant in the printing and dyeing industry.
Sodium phosphate dibasic anhydrous can be used as a water softener, fabric weight gainer, fire retardant, and used in glaze, solder, medicine, pigment, food industry and other phosphates. It can be used as emulsifier quality improver, nutritional enhancer, fermentation aid, chelating agent, stabilizer. Used as boiler water softener, flame retardant for fabric, wood and paper paper, glaze and solder. It is used in the production of detergents, cleaning agents for printing plates and mordants for dyeing. It is used in the printing and dyeing industry as a stabilizer for hydrogen peroxide bleaching, a filler for rayon (to enhance the strength and elasticity of yarn). It is a raw material for the manufacture of sodium pyrophosphate phosphate and other phosphates, and is also a culture agent for monosodium glutamate, erythromycin, penicillin, streptomycin and sewage production and treatment products. Also used for electroplating, blended leather.

Sodium Phosphate, Dibasic is an inorganic salt and a sodium salt of phosphoric acid. Its chemical formula is typically written as Na₂HPO₄.
"Dibasic" Meaning: The "di" means "two," indicating that two of the three hydrogen (H+) ions in phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄) have been replaced by sodium (Na+) ions.
Appearance: It is a white, crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water.
Key Property: It is an excellent buffer. This means it helps solutions resist changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added. It is often used in combination with its counterpart, Sodium Phosphate, Monobasic (NaH₂PO₄), to create a buffer system with a specific, stable pH.
You will find it in several forms, including the anhydrous (no water) form and a common hydrate form with 7 water molecules (Na₂HPO₄ • 7H₂O), which is also known as heptahydrate.
Due to its properties as a buffer, sequestrant, and emulsifier, it has wide-ranging applications in food, medicine, and industry.
In food, it is recognized by the E-number E339(ii). Its functions include:
pH Control and Buffering: Regulates acidity in processed foods, cheeses, and sauces to ensure a consistent taste and texture.
Emulsifier: Helps blend ingredients that normally don't mix well, like oil and water, preventing them from separating. This is crucial in processed cheeses, milk creamers, and meat products.
Stabilizer and Thickener: Improves the texture and mouthfeel of foods like puddings, jellies, and canned soups.
Moisture Retention: Especially in meat and poultry products, it helps the protein retain water, resulting in a juicier product and preventing weight loss during cooking.
Laxative (Bowel Prep): This is one of its most well-known medical uses. It is a osmotic laxative, meaning it draws water into the colon from surrounding tissues. This softens the stool and stimulates bowel movements. It is commonly used to cleanse the bowel before a colonoscopy or other surgeries.
Electrolyte Supplement: It can be used in medical settings to correct low levels of phosphate (hypophosphatemia) or sodium in the blood.
Buffer in Medications: It is used as a buffering agent in many pharmaceutical preparations, including:
Injectable medicines: To ensure the solution matches the pH of blood.
Eye drops and nasal sprays: To make them comfortable and non-irritating.
Tablets: to control the release of the active ingredient.
Laboratory Buffer: It is a fundamental component of common laboratory buffers, such as Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS) and other phosphate buffers, which are essential for maintaining a stable environment for biological and chemical reactions (e.g., in cell culture, DNA analysis, and protein chemistry).
Water Softener: Binds to calcium and magnesium ions in water, preventing scale formation in detergents and industrial cleaning systems.
Nutrient Source: Used in fermentation processes and as a nutrient in certain specialized fertilizers.
While generally recognized as safe (GRAS) in small amounts in food, there are important health considerations:
Laxative Use: The use of oral sodium phosphate products for bowel preparation requires careful medical supervision. Overuse or use in individuals with kidney problems, heart conditions, or dehydration can lead to serious electrolyte imbalances (like high phosphate and sodium levels), kidney damage, and other complications. For this reason, many over-the-counter (OTC) laxatives containing sodium phosphates have been withdrawn or carry strong warnings.
Kidney Health: People with impaired kidney function may have trouble excreting excess phosphate, which can be harmful.
High Dietary Intake: A diet consistently high in phosphates (from processed foods) may be linked to negative health outcomes, particularly for individuals with existing kidney disease, as it can contribute to bone demineralization and cardiovascular issues.
