Nitenpyram (brand name Capstar, among others; CAS 120738-89-8, C₆H₇ClN₄O₂, MW 214.6) is a neonicotinoid insecticide. It acts as an agonist at insect nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, causing sustained neuronal excitation, paralysis and death. Its affinity for mammalian receptors of this type is very low, so it has a favourable safety profile in dogs, cats and humans.
Its defining pharmacokinetic feature is extremely rapid onset with minimal residual activity: oral dosing begins killing fleas within about 30 minutes, kills >90% of adult fleas within 4 hours, has a half-life of only a few hours, is excreted largely unchanged in urine, and shows essentially no tissue accumulation.

Veterinary (primary use)
Oral, fast-acting adulticide for dogs and cats: labelled for puppies/kittens ≥4 weeks old and weighing ≥1 kg (dogs) / ≥0.5 kg (cats); given orally as needed, up to once daily.
"De-burdening" use: rapid knockdown of heavy flea infestations, acute flare-ups of flea allergy dermatitis, and clearing animals on intake at shelters, boarding facilities or before surgery — then hand over to a long-acting preventive.
Diagnostic aid: to confirm whether pruritus is flea-related (rapid symptom relief after dosing points to flea involvement).
