Mechanism of action: diclazuril acts on both asexual and sexual stages of the Eimeria life cycle — primarily sporozoites and first/second-generation schizonts (the first ~48 h of infection), and also gamonts/zygotes. It blocks merozoite formation and oocyst-wall development, causing schizont and gamont necrosis. Research links this to mitochondrial depolarisation/apoptosis in merozoites and inhibition of the parasite's actin-depolymerising factor (ADF), disrupting gliding motility and host-cell invasion.
Anticoccidial spectrum: Eimeria tenella, E. necatrix, E. acervulina, E. maxima, E. brunetti, E. mitis/mivati (chickens); E. adenoeides, E. meleagrimitis, E. gallopavonis (turkeys); duck and rabbit coccidia (hepatic & intestinal); also reported against bovine Eimeria spp. It remains active against some strains resistant to ionophores, clopidol, arprinocid and halofuginone.
