Solvent Red 23 (Colour Index No. 26100), commonly known as Sudan III, is a synthetic azo dye derived from naphthalene. Its chemical structure features a characteristic azo group (–N=N–) linking aromatic rings, making it intensely colored and soluble in non-polar organic solvents.
Staining Agent in Biology & Histology: Its most famous use is as a lipophilic (fat-soluble) stain to identify and color lipids, triglycerides, and lipoproteins in frozen tissue sections and in biochemical assays (e.g., Sudan staining).
Industrial Colorant: It is used to dye non-polar materials such as hydrocarbon-based solvents, fuels, oils, waxes, and some plastics (e.g., polystyrene). Its "Solvent Red" name indicates this primary application.
Chemical Indicator & Tracer: Due to its strong color, it can be used as a visible tracer or flow marker in non-aqueous systems for laboratory or engineering demonstrations.
Model Compound in Chemistry: It serves as a classic example of an azo dye in organic chemistry education and research, particularly for studying synthesis, chromophores, and solubility principles.
It is not permitted for use in food, cosmetics, or pharmaceuticals in most regions due to potential toxicity and carcinogenicity. Its approved uses are strictly industrial and analytical.
