Otilonium bromide is a quaternary ammonium compound that has selective spasmodic activity against the terminals of the gastrointestinal tract, mainly due to its direct myolytic properties. It alters the ion flux of the calcium ion reservoir inside and outside intestinal smooth muscle cells. Otilonium bromide is used for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or cramping pain in the distal part of the digestive tract, colon spasm, gastroenteritis, diseases of the stomach, duodenum and esophagus, and preparation for endoscopy (esophagoscopy, gastroscopy, duodenoscopy and proctoscopy).
Otilonium bromide has a high selectivity and strong antispasmodic effect on smooth muscles of the digestive tract and is often used as an antispasmodic agent.
