Gabapentin is mainly used for the treatment of epilepsy and neuropathic pain, inhibiting the release of pain-causing substances from the presynaptic membrane. Gabapentin binds to the α2δ subunit of the calcium channel of the presynaptic membrane, inhibits the influx of calcium ions and reduces the release of pain-causing substances; Inhibits postsynaptic membrane neuronal excitation. Gabapentin concentration-dependent inhibits the activity of NMDA receptors, inhibits excitatory postsynaptic potential production and neuronal excitability; Promote GABA generation. Gabapentin can enhance glutamate decarboxylase (GAD) activity, increase GABA production, and have an inhibitory effect on neuronal excitability.
Gabapentin is used in patients with epilepsy with localized seizures that are not satisfactorily controlled or tolerated by conventional antiepileptic drugs, as well as additional treatment in patients with localized seizures followed by systemic epilepsy.
