Ampicillin sodium is a broad-spectrum semi-synthetic penicillin, white or off-white powder or crystal, odorless or slightly odorous, slightly bitter taste, hygroscopic. It has a strong antibacterial effect on hemolytic streptococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae and non-penicillinase-producing staphylococci, similar to or slightly inferior to penicillin. Ampicillin sodium also has a good antibacterial effect on Streptococcus viridans, and its effect on enterococci and Listeria is better than that of penicillin. Ampicillin sodium has antibacterial activity against Corynebacterium diphtheria, Bacillus anthracis, Actinomycetes, Haemophilus influenzae, Bauterella pertussis, Neisseria spp., and anaerobic bacteria other than Bacteroides fragil, and some Proteus mirabilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Shigella bacteria are sensitive to it. Ampicillin sodium exerts bactericidal effects by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
Ampicillin sodium is used to treat respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, gastrointestinal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, meningitis, sepsis, endocarditis and so on caused by sensitive bacteria.
