Indapamide is used in the treatment of mild and moderate primary hypertension. Indapamide can also be used for sodium and water retention caused by congestive heart failure, and is also suitable for hypertensive patients with renal failure, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia.
Indapamide has the dual effect of diuresis and calcium antagonism, by inhibiting the Na+ reabsorption proximal to the distal convoluted tubule, producing diuretic effect, and blocking Ca2+ influx, which has high selectivity for vascular smooth muscle, so that peripheral small blood vessels dilate and produce antihypertensive effect.
